Brian McCuller, JD, CPA, is the Shareholder-in-Charge of the tax department in LBMC, PC.

As a tax accountant in Nashville, he specializes in multi-state tax planning and controversy services. Brian has advised Fortune 500 companies, as well as middle-market companies with multi-state and multi-national operations.

Brian has represented clients on a variety of issues before state tax departments across the country. Brian is a frequent speaker and author on the topic of multi-state taxes.  The industries Brian typically serves include manufacturing, software and information technology, online retailers, hotel owners/operators, and retail consumer services.

Brian works with CFOs, controllers, and tax directors in two main areas:

Strategic Planning:  Due to the changing and complex tax environment, companies should regularly review their business structure and state-specific issues to improve compliance and take advantage of opportunities.  Brian helps clients align their multistate tax positions with their core business objectives.

Audit and Appeal Representation:  State tax audits are on the rise in the digital economy.  States are expanding their definitions of nexus and changing the taxability of new products and services.  Brian routinely represents clients during the audit and appeal phase.  Brian has represented clients with operations in states with complex tax structures such as Arizona, California, Florida, New York, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, and Washington.

Brian is an attorney and a CPA with over twenty years of experience in the state and local tax field. Prior to joining LBMC, Brian was a Managing Director in the CBIZ National Tax Office for three years. In this role, Brian provided state and local tax services to CBIZ accounting and tax offices nationwide.  Brian was the partner in charge of state and local tax services for twelve years with Thompson Dunavant, PLC, a local CPA firm based in Memphis, TN.  Under Brian’s leadership, the state and local tax practice was structured as a multi-discipline practice, offering clients compliance and consulting services in the areas of income/franchise tax, sales/use tax, and property tax.  Brian began his career in 1993, and held positions with Arthur Andersen, LLP, and Ernst & Young, LLP in Atlanta, GA.

  • Is my business entitled to tax credits or incentives?
  • Can your firm help us file sales and use tax returns in multiple states?
  • Can you review our tax returns for possible errors and overpayments?

  • Juris Doctorate (JD)
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
I enjoy simplifying complex tax problems for clients and recommending practical solutions.
